NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia – Is it safe to say that everyone who has ever surfed in the ocean has at one time thought about being attacked by a shark? The water is deep, dark, and cold. Who really knows what lurks in the depths of the oceans?
A shark attack can happen to anyone.
23 year-old sponsored surfer, Kai McKenzie, lives every moment to the fullest. Yesterday, McKenzie was surfing near Port Macquarie in NSW when he was attacked by a 10′ Great White shark. The shark bit off McKenzie’s right leg before the surfer was able to escape from the predator.
Miraculously, McKenzie was able to paddle / swim back to shore. There, he received help from a retired police officer who was walking his dog along the sand. The two used the dogs leash as a tourniquet until Emergency Services arrived and took McKenzie to a semi-local hospital.
Luckily, McKenzie’s leg washed up on the beach and authorities iced the leg and rushed the severed limb to the hospital where Doctors are frantically trying to reattach it to McKenzie lower half.
One friend of McKenzie’s said, “He is the toughest person I know.” McKenzie recently returned to surfing after suffering a significant neck injury.
McKenzie remains in stable but serious condition.
