FT. MYERS, Florida and SANTA MONICA – Tropical storm Debby morphed into a hurricane as it made landfall in Florida’s gulf coast. The hurricane brought heavy rain and was reported to be moving at 10 mph by the National Hurricane Center.
The town of Ft. Myers declared a state-of-emergency after at least six inches of rain fell between Saturday and Sunday, according to the website, fortmyersbeachtalk.com. Andy Hyatt, the city Beach Manager, said the town experienced more than three feet of storm surge on Sunday.
After the storm passed and the streets were flooded, the residents questioned what they were supposed to do while the water abated. Several hardy individuals gathered at a local bar to wait while the water drained and the streets cleared.
